“Settantanove scritti o giù di lì” – Vita, amore, morte, i soliti discorsi… / “Seventy-nine writings or thereabouts” – Life, love, death and the usual…

Prefazione

Cosa ci spinge a scrivere poesia?
“Settantanove scritti e mezzo – Vita, amore, morte, i soliti discorsi…” Life, love, death and the usual…”.

[…]
Nulla so di te, distante la tua luce,
mentre perviene, narra il passato,
ma del tuo fulgore assorbo ogni stilla,
mi disseta e fortifica,
sorgente di vita indica la via
da seguire per annullare spazio fra noi,
così da annichilirci all’infinito
in una sola sostanza ogni volta
più lieve nel liberare energia.
In virtù di un principio ignoto
sei destinata a me,
il resto è vuoto. […]

Buona lettura, e buon viaggio.

Preface

What drives us to write poetry? It is our belief that it is the necessity to endow word sequences with spiritual form, to restore to our thought the candour of a rose, the soft touch of a petal, the agreeable scent of a garden in flower.
Essentially, poetry is a bud of the soul and, just like the month of May in full bloom, it knows how to be an unexpected gift and perhaps for this very reason it is more appreciated. Every line of verse is unique beauty which reaches the heart and therein remains because it is eternal, not a motionless sojourn in the memory – on the contrary, in constant renewal in the soul of the reader who decides to make it his own, absorbing the sap infused by the poet at the moment of creation.
Poetry is triumph and heritage, it is a decision to bequeath the most noble part of oneself not only to blood descendants but also to all those who will simply pass through the doors of this life after us.
Mauro Giovanelli loves poerty, he tends to it, he cultivates it, he gives life to it, he immortalizes it, he even sanctifies it when he decides to make it a sacred element, not only to be venerated but also to be protected and loved above all else.
This is why in the course of his life he has endeavoured devotedly, indeed totally committed himself – if he has succeeded in having various collections published, now he is ready for a more complex and intense project. It comes in the form of an anthology of his works, comprising exclusive texts now presented alongside already published pieces, all in a new edition.
“Settantanove scritti e mezzo – Vita, amore, morte, i soliti discorsi…” is the title of this ambitious collection, along with the parallel text presented in English, entitled “Seventy-nine writings or thereabouts” – Life, love, death and the usual…”.
The collection includes texts from “Pulsionale, poesia III Millennio, 1a e 2a edizione” and “Le tessere del pàmpano”, both published by Vertigo Edizioni, as well as recent, first-time productions, such as “The cemetery of the bees”, “Pulsion”, “I love you”, “The other side of Giacomo Leopardi”, “Your thickness”, “What remains”, “I shall try again”, “Annihilated”, “Bisomus tomb” – to mention but a few.
In the previous writings what struck the reader was an innate versatility, capable of expressing itself in lines of verse apt to take by surprise, “active” as a living organism devoid of any plan to simply recline on the page. Giovanelli’s poetry is, indeed, capable of glowing at every touch, glance, as if whence it drew nourishment and, once passed on to the reader, it causes a new element of interpretation to blossom.
In Pulsionale (1a edizione), for example, such a claim is boasted by an adjoining artistic element, since the text had been enriched by what we like to define as art impressions, «…the poet includes reproductions of works belonging to his private collection of historical family pictures, photographs taken by the poet himself and others of universal acclaim because of their artistic merit…» (from Preface to the first edition). Hence, such a publication constituted an experience of some wealth, as if Mauro Giovanelli had wished to let us feel surrounded by lyric poetry and art, wrapped in beauty, in the fashion of an embrace both affectionate and sensual, a warm invitation to cling to each other in the shelter of the sensations under the portentous protection of the creativity which excites and allows itself to be carried to an unknown world – welcoming like no other before.
It is the poet’s subtle intellectual capacity which ferries us across to the ensuing works, up to “Le tessere del pàmpano”; his roots are anchored in a knowledge which is no mere caption but passion, hence true and sincere, rich in stimuli and tirelessly “desirous” for new discoveries, a boundless thirst for understanding.
It is this very attitude which has allowed him to give voice to a demand come to life in conjunction with the tragic events experienced over these past eighteen months – a period which seems dramatically prolonged because of the mark left on all of us and even now we are still unable to gauge re respective present existences. It is with this anthology that Mauro Giovanelli shows his ability to adapt not only from an artistic point of view but also with an unmistakable inclination to keep apace with the times and innovate, seeking in poetry the exact cue so as to set out in search of incisive experiences, the fruit of vigorous urgency which certainly hails from discomfort, but also from that inborn ability of man not to give in when faced with adversity; the choice is to face this latter, even when it remains impossible to grasp the effective full scope. The poet possesses a continually triggered resilience which few are granted the ability to put into practice.
The new components do not arrive unexpectedly – indeed, how can you halt the creative wave? Through necessity they are accepted, even expected, by the reader confident that this time too the poet might be able to offer a sincere and productive contribution to our desire to listen. As a matter of fact, as it appears in the volume, the florilegium covers a range of varied structural expressiveness; for example, some are very close to prose (consider the text “Il tuo spessore”, of which some excerpts are reported) with longer more articulated lines bordering on an energetic stream of consciousness requiring infinite elements – almost as if footholds for lightning ascent to awareness. The reader feels a part of a brief monologue created in the solitude of his own soul but with the ardent desire to have it shared with whoever truly knows how to listen.

[…]
you know, in the end one thing remained impressed upon me, you would not believe it, I myself have got difficulty in explaining, and I would not know how to describe it, or to answer why I remember that sunny afternoon, distant babble, cold and cutting light of the day, in a word, I mean, you were sitting to one side on a stone along the path, saucy air about you, knees together, feet outspread, white socks, your look, but this is not the point, it is when we lay down on the grass, I got on top of you, never will I be able to forget the supple volume, yes the substance of your body […]
(Your thickness)

These pieces are accompanied by a more contained, minimalist, almost aphoristic choice which is aimed at sounding the primordial meaning of man, as if the question on the mystery of life had become compelling and no longer deferrable. We sense that the very idea of being humans has been not simply altered but overturned and the search for our place in the world is perceived as enormous.

[…]
The question is not
“what is the universe?”,
the question is
“was I planned? And why?”. […]
(At random)

Also consider:

[…]
A poet is whoever writes,
under dictation,
about a high principle
converting its tongue
to a universal language. […]
(A poet is…)

The choice of a powerful metaphor such as the worker bee in the composition “The cemetery of the bees” is indicative. Witnessed is a form of life most akin to the insect’s in a slow agony, which might seem ceaseless for lack of will on the part of whoever could do something, anger and impotence which unite in a desolation which impinges upon the very shores of man’s existence, and the question is begged as to whether we are talking merely of bees or of each one of us, in a symbiosis which is ancestral brotherhood.
A heart-rending and raw sensation remains in the reader but it does not tower above the awareness of possessing the key to overcome all this, it is the desire for a better world, it is that same poem we entrust our messages to and which we wish to divulge, like the flight of the bee as he carries redeeming pollen, even in the sidereal space which the poet opens to our vision:

[…]
I know nothing about you, distant is your light,
as it arrives, narrates the past,
but of your radiance I absorb every drop,
it quenches my thirst and strengthens me,
life’s source show me which turning
to take in order to nullify space between us,
so as to annihilate us towards infinity
making us one sole substance
each time lighter in releasing energy.
Thanks to an unknown principle
you are destined to me,
everything else is emptiness. […]
(Annihilated)

It is not infrequent for the vision of Mauro Giovanelli’s world to approach mathematical equations and the laws of physics, but not in a system designed to reduce the meaning of sentiment and the soul, on the contrary it affords them breath, exalting the same in the attempt to possess the formula. The poet nestles in the meanders of the Cosmos without losing the thread which allows him to return to Earth, he is a figure rich in complexity and most certainly a man consistent in his thought, a man whose prose empties itself, spilling onto paper as would a river. His every book is a sum of multiple elements requiring pauses for reflection, re-reading and their totality go on to mould an articulated picture where the universal themes of life, love and death move along tracks at times separate, at times intersecting – the technique is knowing and the style that of a master.
Enjoy the read and the trip.
